How to Choose an iPhone Repair Shop (And What to Avoid)
Parts, warranty, pricing and the red flags to watch for, so your repair is done once and done properly.
By Mike, Bristol iPhone Repair, repairing iPhones since 2007
Search "iPhone repair" and you'll get a page full of shops with wildly different prices and no easy way to tell them apart. Two screen repairs can look identical on the day you collect your phone and be completely different six months later. Here's what to check before you hand your iPhone over to anyone.
What to look for
1. They tell you exactly what parts they use
The part makes the biggest difference to how a repair turns out. Ask the shop straight out what screen or battery they'll fit. A good repairer will give you a clear answer, something like:
- Genuine: an original Apple part, the same as your iPhone came with.
- Premium aftermarket: a high-quality copy built to match the original's colour, brightness and touch response.
- Budget aftermarket: cheaper parts that often look duller, drain the battery faster and fail sooner. On many newer iPhones, the cheapest screens swap the original OLED for an LCD panel, and you can see the difference.
If they can't answer, or change the subject, take that as your cue to look elsewhere. You can see the parts we fit, and the cheaper ones we refuse to use, on our screens we use page.
2. A proper warranty, in writing
Any shop that's confident in its work will guarantee it. Plenty offer 90 days or less, which tells you how long they expect their parts to last. Ask how long the warranty is and what it covers. It should cover faulty parts and workmanship, not a fresh drop or crack. At Bristol iPhone Repair, our screen and parts repairs come with a lifetime warranty, and batteries are covered for 12 months.
3. Clear prices up front
For everyday repairs like screens, batteries and charging ports, a good repairer should give you a price for your model before they start. Some faults do need a look inside first, such as water damage or a phone that won't turn on. In that case you should be told exactly what they've found, and the price, before any work goes ahead. No surprises when you pay.
4. Honest advice, even if it means no sale
Sometimes a repair isn't worth it. The phone might be worth less than the fix, or there might be a deeper fault that makes the repair risky. A trustworthy repairer will tell you that rather than take your money anyway.
5. Real reviews from real customers
Google reviews give you a good feel for a business. Don't just look at the star rating. Read what people say about how long the repair lasted, how the shop communicated, and what happened when something went wrong. How a business replies to the odd bad review tells you a lot too. Have a look at our reviews.
Tip: on recent iPhones, go to Settings → General → About and look for Parts & Service History. It shows which parts have been replaced and whether the iPhone recognises them as genuine. It's worth knowing about before and after any repair, and when buying a second-hand iPhone. There's more on this in our post on genuine paired parts.
Warning signs to watch for
A price that seems too good to be true. A decent part and a skilled technician cost money, so there's a point below which a quality repair simply can't be done. Rock-bottom prices nearly always mean bottom-of-the-range parts, and you often end up paying twice when they fail.
No warranty, or a very short one. If they won't stand behind the repair, ask yourself why.
Vague answers about parts. "It's a good one, don't worry" isn't an answer. You're entitled to know what's going into your phone.
Being rushed into a decision. Lines like "this price is only for today" are sales pressure, not good service. A good repairer is happy for you to take your time.
You can't trace the business. Check there's a proper business name, a website, a phone number that gets answered and a history of reviews. If something goes wrong after the repair, you need to be able to find them again.
What about mobile iPhone repair?
A good mobile repairer comes with a big advantage: your iPhone never leaves your sight. Instead of dropping it off and coming back later, the repair happens in front of you, often in under an hour. Apply the same checks as you would to a shop. You want clear parts information, a solid warranty, upfront pricing, and a real business with reviews behind it.

Frequently asked questions
Are aftermarket iPhone screens any good?
The good ones are. A premium aftermarket screen can look and feel very close to the original. The cheapest ones are a different story, which is why it's worth asking exactly which grade you're getting.
What warranty should an iPhone repair come with?
It varies a lot between shops, from nothing at all to a lifetime warranty. Longer is better, and it should cover faulty parts and workmanship. Always get it in writing.
Is a mobile iPhone repair as good as a shop repair?
It can be better. With a good mobile repairer you get the same parts and the same skill, your phone never leaves your sight, and you don't have to travel anywhere.
